When asked about the age difference, Wagenknecht emphasized that they had already separated from their respective spouses before their relationship began. She further noted that they have been living together in Saarland, a small German state bordering France, for over a decade.

Lafontaine, a former leader of the German Social Democratic Party (SPD), has been vocal in his support of Wagenknecht's views.
