Deadly Airstrike Kills Dozens in Gaza Refugee Camp
Escalating Tensions Fuel Tragedy
At least 45 people, including women and children, were killed in an Israeli airstrike on a camp for displaced Palestinians in the southern Gaza city of Rafah.
The strike, which took place late Sunday, also injured dozens of people, according to Palestinian officials. Israel said it was reviewing the strike after reports said two Hamas officials were killed in the attack.
The incident reflects the escalating tension at the border since early May when the city became the focus of an Israeli invasion that began with airstrikes and ground troops moving into the area.
Dozens of people have been killed in Rafah in recent weeks as Israeli forces have pushed into the city. The airstrike on Sunday was the deadliest single incident in the conflict so far.
The strike came as thousands of Palestinians were fleeing Rafah, seeking safety from the Israeli invasion. The United Nations said that more than 100,000 people have been displaced from their homes in the Gaza Strip since the Israeli offensive began.
